MVNEGood? Wonder Girls' "Be My Baby" MV Review

Final Verdict:
T.S.AAV: This song and video tightly made and the Wonder Girls kept with the same style they had before, and perhaps that's what make it tame and simple. Another disappointing comeback. I wish they had a video with a BANG.
Rayestar: The Wonder Girls came back with a different kind of retro style, but they were trained this way, so they do it well. After over a year, they seemed to have matured since 2 Different Tears with the bright flashy colors, and Hyerim has also improved since joining the group,

When it comes to the phrase "The holidays" for a prompt, whats the first things you think of? (It's automatically "Winter" Holidays) Christmas. Hanukah. New Year's Eve. Perhaps Thanksgiving. And then what? Family. Friends. Santa. Presents. Shopping sprees. And the lots more. The holidays are a great season to get ideas from real life because it is practically like a *prompt* that's specific enough, yet broad enough to write from.

So today, I'll be talking about how to use something interesting that happened during the Holidays.

MVNEGood? Tablo "Tomorrow" & Jinwoon (2AM) "If Not Now" MVs Review

Final Verdict: "Jinwoon has a good video... The style of the mv seems to fit Jinwoon, especially the rock aspect (see "You Walking Towards Me"), and it's a creative mv, which coincides with how 2AM's mvs usually go since they're strictly a ballad group."

"Tomorrow" Final Verdict: "This is a good, simple video. The song's meaning is obvious, all the video's components match up with it, and it tightly wrapped up and well made. It's rather similar to Big Bang's "Love Song" so I'm wondering whats up with YG repeating a similar concept."

T.S.AAV Anti-Creativity Block: Lost Handwritten Notes

One lesson writers and artists should pick up a habit of doing is noticing small things. I'm beginning to realize this is really helping me get ideas for concrete details.

Thus, today I'll be talking about looking out for handwritten notes in the middle of nowhere. You know how in a lot of popular mystery stories, there's often scraps of papers that have hidden codes written out and villain threat notices? Well, believe it or not, look out for those when you're walking around in public. It's hard to believe how many you can find, even if it's not mystery related.

Last week, whilst in the mall, I suddenly decided to pick up this torn sheet of paper that I noticed I stepped on. It said:

Coincidentally, the next time I decided to actively look out for handwritten pieces of paper, I found a receipt whilst in a different mall that said:

There is no way I can appreciate how cool these anonymous notes can be. Because you don't know who originally wrote them, or who they're referring to, the mystery and the tension it makes is bound to make you curious, and thus, force you to imagine a backstory to it.

The note on the receipt for exg. Starting off from that, I could easily generate an idea of writing why Erika wasn't with her friends/family to look for the tree, or a scene showing her friends looking at the tree.

The 1st scrap of paper that talks about TM, 5 girls, and Sat night is more intriguing. Lemme read it to you again. [read] I'd kinda like to hear what you guys have to say and what you think it means? [pause] Know whats interesting? Just from the fact that we are trying to figure out what the note means is raw material! You can practically copy your footsteps of decoding this note into a couple of scenes, maybe an entire story or novel!

What's great about the first note as well, is that it's clear imagery for a 2-dimensional artwork. Even though it gives you the bare minimum of details, you can still picture "5 girls playing together" and piece it with "Sat Night LA" to paint/sketch an image of, obviously, 5 girls playing on a saturday night in la. or assortment of ideas that branch out from that, from a girls night out to saturday night live to saturday night football to who knows what else!

As writers and artists, we kind of have to notice the small things in order to more realistically fill up a scene or painting. And, if you hunt for small things like random handwritten notes on the floor, you are bound to have a raw item to write from. It's a mystery, its the unknown. And that's what can start a story or artwork. It's so rewarding.

So! I think it'd like to assign my viewers something. Whether you're an artist, writer, or not, go scrounge around for lost handwritten notes. And comment your findings here! It'll be fun and a great bucket of ideas here.

Final Verdict: "Secret has a good video. Everything is coherent, looks nice, matches, and their style is still the same."

"The Boys" Final Verdict: "This video has fallen into Super Junior video formula trap. It has great art direction for separate individual members and moments. However, SM has made a big mistake by randomly tossing those gorgeous scenes with modern sets with electro-pop music. Major disappoint."

T.S.AAV Anti-Creativity Block: Public transportation

As a writer and artist who frequently has writers/artists' block, I thought it would be nice to create a weekly vlog where I talk about different ways to overcome creativity blocks with real life experiences. Not only will it help myself by talking it out, I hope it will help the gazillion other writers and artists out there.

So, today I'll be talking about public transportation and writing.

One really cool way to get out of creativity block is to ride public transportation. Here you will see a HUGE barrage of interaction or lack of interaction, both of which are greatly useful as source of raw material to see how real people interact. Also, you will save on gas.

For example, one morning, I took a different bus route to school, one that was more crowded than the bus I usually take. Within a few blocks, a blonde girl got on and this middle aged guy suddenly noticed her combat shoes and began talking to her about them. He then went on explaining about the U.S. army's use of combat boots. And then. His experience as a medic in the Vietnam and Iraq War. And boy did he have a lot of information and opinions. *drink* The blonde combat boots girl eventually got off the bus.

What's even more cool and interesting was that the next time I decided to use that bus instead of my old one, guess who I saw waiting at the same bus stop? That medic veteran. Talk about coincidences.

Now if an opportunity like this arises, any sort of coincidence, it's a sign to me, that its something that can be written about. You can turn him into a character by creating a backstory for him. Or you can have a scene where two strangers coincidentally meet at a bus or train stop. Or you can create a scene of what happens after the blond girl left the bus.

What's great is that you saw them in real life, you experienced the coincidence, and that makes it that much more easier for you to connect with the moment and write about it.

So take public transportation for inspiration!

Great symbolism, art direction, costumes, set, etc. The only issue I have, is the fact that this is highly highly manufactured to imitate a Western MV. Nothing wrong with that, it just sort of raises the question of whether or not, then, all those protest songs from America and Europe actually mean anything anymore if an entertainment company can just produce one. "

Rayestar Final Verdict: "I wonder what the budget was for the video. The music video itself was great in terms of symbolism and overall visual, but the comeback itself is clearly lacking both music and dancing."

MVNEGood? Kyujong "Yesterday" MV Review

T.S.AAV Final Verdict: "I think this is a good solo debut song, but the storyline is rather empty and there are a couple weird spots here and there in the video. however they're only noticeable if you're a crazy critic and willing to watch it objectively."

Rayestar Final Verdict: "Personally, I think Kyujong stands out more as a solo artist more than he ever could in the group SS501, where his voice was overshadowed by the stronger vocalists. Even now, though, Kyujong says he isn't aiming to compete or be compared to the other members. He just wants to make a decent debut, which he cleanly accomplished."

-To quote a YouTube comment: For those of you who want to know what the MV means... basically the boys have well, died, and this girl is still waiting for them. They're begging her to move on or accept it. The train represents the journey to Paradise, and at the end, she walks out of the house, basically saying, goodbye. and thats why when she looks back L's not there.

-I REALLY love the song. I don't really like the video. This kind of gives away my age, but the chorus really reminds me of Pokemon. You know that really old 1st episode in the original english dub Pokemon anime, when Ash is rescuing Pikachu for the 1st time in the rain…. this sounds like it. A lot.

-It's really high tho, I wonder if they'll be able to hit it live. Nonetheless, Im really beginning to love their 90s pop music style.

-Sungyeol and Sungjong still have the least lines, but when Sungyeol is singing... you see the girl more clearly than him, whereas you see Sungjong singing + closeup...

-The flashing lights inside the bus goes with the beat and that.is.lovely. Also makes it appear that they are moving.

-Inside the house, its also great that each time she passes by a member, he's initially in the dark or on the floor (in Sungjong's scene, I like to think that under the cloth is actually his body and the one sitting is his ghost)

-One thing that really urks me about Infinite is that they tend to look the same- their hairstyles are either slicked up/back or bangs swept to one side. This also happened in their other videos, which is why it's so hard for me to distinguish them apart. Which is ridiculous cause Super Junior, which has 13-15 members still manages to look completely different from each other.

However, big flaw- unless you're a hardcore delusional Kissme, there wont be anything else interesting for you to rewatch a year from now due to lack of interesting content."

Rayestar Final Verdict: "Definitely their strongest song and dance yet, and it's been ranking high on the charts. Too bad this heavily implies that it too Alexander and Kibum leaving the group to make them better, but hopefully U-KISS will be able to win their first first-place award soon. They deserve it."

-I am forever impressed that Hyunmin can fit his deep “husky” voice into DGNA/Daikoku Danji’s songs when uh wth SHINee cant fit Minho’s wtf man…

-I am wondering why on earth each of their jpop music videos are Love _ (Power, Bingo, now Parade)
-OMG MIKA I LOVE YOU …. but what is with your “piss piss piss” shirt?

Can't help it… I need to do a mini-review of U-KISS "Neverland".
I'm really starting to enjoy AJ's deep English singing voice… anyways…
First thing- I think people should look up translations before they pass off the MV as making no sense. Unless its for SM's boy groups- their dance MVs are pretty much meaningless. But otherwise, most other companies with fewer groups to invest in, invest in creativity and it works.

Writers, Idols, and Filmmakers are Trolls

I have a theory. Fans are more wild than their products/idols.
   This should actually be obvious, right? I mean you see fangirls blowing up left and right, fanwarring over published material, scandals, etc. Have you ever wondered about the products/idols' reactions , though? (I'm not talking only about Kpop idols, though.)
   Unresearched examples: Fanwars between Jacob & Edward. As far as I'm concerned, Meyer hasn't blown up and gone wild defending herself. Fanwars over the Jongkeyung scandal. Only thing that truly happened was Sekyung shutting her cyworld and SHINee/SNSD getting more security. Fanwars over Ke$ha's content. She hasn't posted up a gazillion blogs and vlogs.
   Of course, of course. They have to worry about their image, popularity, and, in Kpop's case, oppressive companies.
   But what if that's not the case? What it the artist's/author's themselves like it? What if they enjoy overreactive fans and are cracking up watching fanwars? What if they're trolls?

Yaoi, Fanfics... and Sexism?

The other day I was rereading a smutty Kpop yaoi fanfic. And reread it the next day. In the meantime I surfed around the internet, reading regular yaoi as well, and occasionally observing fanwars on official music videos and OTP fanvids on YouTube.

Then I realized something.

Fangirl/boys keep saying they like so-and-so for their looks, their talents, their sexiness. They like this-and-that couple because it is "real", it is "hot", etc. etc. There are fanwars supporting or hating when a member of that fancouple turns out to be dating a real person.

But is that real? Or are fangirls/guys just using it as an excuse to get away from sexist reality?

Sudden Kpop Realizations/Rants

I will probably make some fancy ass posts about these later. But I had a couple... "epiphanies" and random ideas and felt I need to share them.

1.Is the reason Kpop artists keep "debuting" in Japan a possible revenge for what Japan did to Korea culturally in the 20th century? Ooooh juicy conspiracy.

2.Is the lyrics and concept to SHINee's Lucifer a reflection of racism in America?
3.Why are boys allowed to hip thrust and spread their legs when girls can't (or at least they're criticized for it)?
4.Girl groups have to work harder than boys to achieve the same amount of success, both in Kpop and elsewhere.
5.Is plastic surgery, flashy music, flashy looks, etc. really that bad or are people just uncomfortable with it?
6.Do Kpop artists (not the companies) actually know what they're putting out... and just laughing at how the fans get worked up over everything? (I know I do that with my creative work)
7.Why is it fine for girls to squeal over "bulges" but men look like perverts when fapping over boobs?
8. Why are girls allowed to scream "OMFG I'm totally going to turn les for this [insert hot female artist name]"when boys are clearly, clearly, clearly not allowed to say "[insert hot male artist] is going to turn me gay"? Why??? Why???
9.While I'm annoyed by it, I'm actually glad Korea's promoting the "Hallyu Wave" world takeover. Not because of its ideals, but because at least its being honest. Unlike American pop stars who hide making money/being famous with music under "human rights!" and "expressing myself!" crap.
10. 2NE1 did it better than SHINee. Both "Hello" and "I Am The Best" are very cliqued, boring titles and concepts. However, there's no arguing that "I Am the Best" is more exciting, better rapped/sung and filmed, and more ideas. The biggest thing is that "Hello" is much like a safe, "generic" debut song that any group can pull off, whereas "I Am the Best" is more bombastic, really "belongs" to 2NE1, and even better, has possible symbols and meaningful layers of content in the video. Like an actual video that would be released since the group has more experience now. duuur
11. Jailbaits. Seriously. Especially hot ones. People! Really now- anticipating when a jailbait becomes legal isn't that big a deal you have to proclaim your ovary eruption! I mean, what can you do if a certain jailbait turns legal? Nothing! So stop making a big fuss!
12. Kpop is like my first piano teacher. American pop is like my current teacher. Both are BFFs(and I secretly think they have more chemistry than meets the eye) and very successful. Why can't K/USA-pop interaction be like that? (Interestingly, my first teacher was White and my current one is Chinese xD)
13. Why are companies always the one to blame? I've been noticing a lot of people saying "It's the company's fault that X Idol has to do this/that" and/or "The company did this/that, not the artist." Um... I'm pretty sure the idols must've have had some self influence in doing stuf...
14. The current Kpop hype is like the "Tragedy of the Commons" theory. All these companies are coming out with groups because its a huge investment idea. In fact, on a individual basis, its actually very good. HOWEVER, if you look a the larger group version, its much like overgrazing- more and more groups come out, overstuffing the market, it becomes boring and repetitive, and no one finds Kpop as unique and interesting as it was before. Which would suck. Hey, South Korean companies, take a look at the British Invasion of the 60s, will ya? Learn something! Someone compared the Beatles' breakup to DBSK's breakup. And suddenly things seem to make sense.

As a creative arts person... this is proof my mind goes to weird places.

I will update this specific post from time to time as I come to realize more and more random observations.

I found something interesting. Recently, rewatched Kevjumba's "is kevjumba a heterosexual bear wrestler" video, re-Googled "is Ke" and the first thing that popped without even finish typing kevjumba was that phrase.
Then I wondered what other "is ___" autoresults are likely to pop up.
Of course, nothing about me or any of my other favorite vloggers, bloggers, etc. showed up. So some other results I found very, very interesting.

Big Bang Special Edition Album Review

Extra: I finally decided to take a photoset of the contents here.
Now, I am NOT a hardcore fangirl of Big Bang so don't be uber offended by anything I say.

Little background. At Fanime 2011, Jpop vs Kpop Battle Royale panel, there was a Lucifer dance off between me and some other guy. I won (and looked stupid) and got a Big Bang special edition album. To be honest, the album wasn't that "special" to me, but the glory of winning and the potential that I may gain some attention was tempting. Now, don't get me wrong-- I personally REALLY loved the song, music video, and live performance of Big Bang's "Love Song". The live dance wasn't amazing, but their ninja dancing was eeepic. And the vocals were AWESOME.

Now the actual review.

I listened to ONLY the CD in my CD player. I did NOT look at English translations and did NOT bother with looking up who sang which parts or figuring out what the song meant. I ONLY focused on what I could hear out of my CD player.

Songs-

"Love Song": as I've said, this is a glorious, glorious kpop song. wonderful music. great even without the music video.

"Stupid Liar": hate to say it, and hate to use a lame pun, but this song was not only titled "stupid", it also sounded "stupid". the chorus was nasally and and every time they sang "stupid", it was accented(?) in a which that seemed retarded.

"Tonight": another beautiful song. (the music video for this one also happened to be shown at the jpop vs kpop panel) however, the chorus had too much autotune. and this sounds weird since i'm not a hardcore big bang fan... but TOP's voice was... interestingly distinct, very smooth, nice, and... seductive...

All these guys are extremely popular, hot, and, of course, unattainable. They all fit under the phrase "Who needs a boyfriend when you can idolize X ?"

Obviously, they all present something similar. They’re all chaste, asexual, sex symbols for drooling fangirls. One problem—it’s impossible to ever achieve a relationship with any of them. One of them is a video game character, another is an anime character, and another is a celebrity. The only thing an overly obsessed fangirl can do is fantasize, of course, or ship them with another guy (*coff* Minho, Naruto *coff*).

However, in a logical sense, fantasizing after an impossible guy is a horribly disturbing concept. It’s like, stalker with a crush, but either the crush is so far up the social ladder or is not real, and, in both cases, definitely does not know the stalker. So which is worse? Lusting after a fake person or a real person?

I recently found out about their Lucifer remix at Gayo Daejun... and i dropped my freakin' jaw

It was much better than their shinee 1st concert x-men claws remix but... it sickened me. Absolutely horrifying. In a good and bad way.

In terms of my obsession with yaoi, i LOVE it when good-looking, cute, bishie-like guys are in an extremely submissive, masochist, bdsm, etc. etc. manner. This performance was that in perfection. Sadly, it's real people, and while I may fantasize it happening to anime/manga characters... I do not like it happening to otherwise real people.

This remix of Lucifer made them look like porn stars, which is pretty gross, especially considering the sexiest of them was, undoubtedly, jailbait maknae Taemin. (Onew, too, was amazingly sexy).

OMFG It was awesome.... may have been even better if my group had not ditched me two days before going.

Anyways, to quick summarize everything that happened (see my facebook & deviantart for more details since i started them first):

Saturday: got my badge, checked into hotel, checked out artist alley, watched a movie i forgot, princess tutu gathering, watched performances on stage zero, did the masquerade, had a blast, went to sleep. cosplay: Lucy Heartfilia (Fairy Tail)

Sunday: checked out dealers hall, bought some crap, d.gray-man gathering, went to the fanimaid cafe, CLAMP & Hetalia gathering, B&W Ball dance lessons, Kuroshitsuji gathering, Black and White Ball, met the unrequited guy of my dreams, went to sleep. Cosplay: Lenalee Lee (D.Gray-man)

Monday: checked out of hotel, searched dealer's hall one last time, left home
